Daily AI briefing for Sunday, August ninth.
First, OpenAI has acquired NextSlide, a presentation startup, according to TechCrunch. The detail that matters is not slide decks; it is workflow capture. NextSlide says its team is now working on ChatGPT, which points to OpenAI continuing to turn ChatGPT from a chatbot into a work surface for documents, presentations, and agentic office tasks. Somewhere, PowerPoint felt a disturbance in the Force.
Anthropic’s Claude Code remains the week’s most interesting developer story. The Decoder reports that Anthropic will make Auto Mode the default for Claude Code on Pro, Max, and Team plans starting August fourteenth. Anthropic’s argument is safety: its classifier reportedly caught eighty-nine percent of dangerous commands in tests, versus thirteen point six percent for human reviewers. That is a striking claim, and also a reminder that the coding-agent interface is shifting from “approve every shell command” toward supervised automation.
Google DeepMind has a research signal worth watching: DiffusionGemma. The Decoder says Google retrofitted Gemma 4 into a text diffusion model using less than ten percent of the original training budget. Instead of generating token by token, it can generate chunks in parallel, reportedly around fifteen hundred tokens per second. Quality still lags the autoregressive model, especially on reasoning, but if this line improves, inference latency could become a real battleground again.
The broader AI infrastructure story is less cheerful. TechCrunch and The Verge both report that an Amazon-linked Texas data center plan includes a gas-fired power plant that could become one of the largest single sources of climate pollution in the United States. The Decoder adds that Nvidia is putting up to three billion dollars into power-infrastructure developer Lancium. Translation: the AI race is now also a grid, permitting, and energy race.
Finally, AI’s second-order effects are showing up in institutions. The Decoder cites reporting that Britain’s employment courts are seeing more AI-generated legal filings, including long claims with fabricated citations, worsening backlogs. The takeaway: access improves, but frictionless paperwork can also become denial-of-service by PDF.
Bottom line: today’s AI news is less about one dazzling model and more about systems around models: office workflows, coding autonomy, faster inference, and the physical and legal infrastructure creaking underneath.
