First: OpenAI is back in Sacramento’s AI safety debate. TechCrunch reports the company now says California should strengthen SB 53, the state bill focused on frontier-model safety and transparency. That is a notable turn because OpenAI previously opposed an earlier California effort. The practical signal: the big labs are trying to shape safety rules before states write them without industry fingerprints. Shocking, I know — companies prefer regulation with editable margins.
Second: a new TechCrunch piece says frontier labs still have thin public plans for containing a rogue or runaway model. The point is not that Skynet has submitted a pull request.
